Solar planning for schools and health facilities in Ghana

Schools and health facilities have different risk profiles from homes. Lighting, communications, vaccine or medicine refrigeration, laboratory devices, water, security and digital records may have specific continuity needs. The design must reflect the facility's actual services and applicable standards.

Create a critical-load register

List each service, its power, operating schedule, starting surge and consequence of interruption. Medical equipment must be assessed with its manufacturer requirements and qualified facility personnel; a generic solar package is not a clinical assurance.

Separate service levels

Life-safety and clinically critical loads require a different reliability discussion from classroom lighting or administrative equipment. Use dedicated circuits and clear escalation procedures where appropriate.

Plan operation and maintenance

Assign trained operators, inspection routines, cleaning, alarm response, battery monitoring, spare-parts strategy and service contacts. Budget for maintenance from the beginning.

Commission and document

Test intended outage behaviour, changeover, autonomy assumptions, protection and user controls. Keep drawings, settings, equipment schedules, test results and handover training records.
