Hybrid Power

Combining a generator, solar and batteries in Ghana

A hybrid system can reduce unnecessary generator runtime and improve resilience, but the sources must be coordinated safely.

Many Ghanaian properties already own a generator before considering solar and batteries. Integration can allow solar to carry daytime loads, batteries to bridge shorter outages and the generator to support prolonged low-energy periods. The outcome depends on controls and operating strategy.

Give each source a job

Define when the grid, solar, battery and generator should supply loads or charge storage. Priorities may change by time, battery state, tariff or criticality. Write the sequence of operation before programming equipment.

Check generator compatibility

Confirm voltage, frequency, phase arrangement, neutral and earthing, waveform stability, minimum loading and capacity to run loads while charging batteries. Some inverter-chargers allow adjustable input and charge current.

Ghana planning note: Bring the generator model, rating, phase, fuel records and existing changeover details to the design review.

Prevent unsafe back-feeding

Use properly rated transfer equipment and interlocking so sources cannot energise each other or the public network unintentionally. Existing generator wiring should be inspected before integration.

Optimise without overpromising

A coordinated system may reduce generator starts, light-load running and fuel use, but actual savings depend on outage patterns, loads, solar resource, generator efficiency and control settings. Monitor performance after commissioning.

Hybrid power works best when every source has a defined role and a safe boundary.
