Backup Power

What to know about backup power systems in Ghana

A backup system is an energy bridge during an outage. Its usefulness depends on the loads it carries, the battery energy available and how reliably it recharges.

In Ghana, the words inverter, UPS, battery and solar backup are often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not. A dependable backup system is a coordinated set of components designed around a specific service level: which appliances must remain on, for how long, and how soon the stored energy must be restored.

The four jobs in a backup system

The inverter converts battery energy into usable AC power. The battery stores energy. A charger restores that energy from the grid, solar panels or a generator. The distribution and protection equipment safely sends power only to the intended circuits. One large component cannot compensate for poor coordination elsewhere.

Start with an outage plan

List the essential loads and their operating hours during an outage. Include starting surges from fridges, pumps and motors. A television, fan and router have a very different requirement from air-conditioning, water heating or electric cooking.

Ghana planning note: Before requesting a price, define your essential appliances, expected backup hours and preferred charging sources.

Decide how the system will recharge

Grid-only backup may work where outages are short and grid recovery is predictable. Solar-assisted backup can restore batteries during daylight and reduce grid dependence, but panel area, charge-controller limits and seasonal conditions still matter.

Protect the battery and the people

Correct cable sizes, over-current protection, isolation, ventilation where required, earthing and a clear changeover arrangement are part of the system—not optional accessories. Installation should follow manufacturer instructions and applicable electrical requirements.

Buy the service level you need, not merely an inverter label or a battery count.

Important: This educational article is not a site-specific electrical design, financial valuation or guarantee of system performance. Final decisions require a load assessment, site inspection and appropriately qualified professionals.
